Call out and call in racism

Effort: Medium | Time: 3 hours

If you witness racist behaviour, there are many things you can do to help stop the incident, prevent it from escalating and minimise the harm to the targeted group or person. Standing up to racism isn’t always easy, but it’s the right thing to do.

Steps to take action

In your daily life you can:

  1. Learn more about what it means to call out and call in racism, and why it matters. You can learn more via the helpful resources below.
  2. Listen to people who have experienced racism.
  3. Learn how to have uncomfortable conversations about race and discrimination. For examples of what you can say in different scenarios, this anti-racist conversation guide might be helpful.

In a particular scenario where you are witnessing racism:

  • Actively decide if you will call out or call in racism.
  • Keep your cool.
  • Be clear in what you say and think about the language you use.
